The origins of the hip flask date back to medieval times when the pilgrim bottle was associated with the religious pilgrimages' to the holy land. Usually made from leather or glass very much is like todays hip flask they were flat on one side, rounded on the other and usually fitted with a ring at the base of the neck so a chain or leather chain or string could be threaded through and worn around the body or hung from a saddle.
Around 1800 hip flasks were made from solid silver combined sometimes with glass, showing the level of liquid remaining. A Screw on cap which could be used as a little "nip" (measurement) glass. today many hip flasks are made from stainless steel making the flask a much more affordable gift. Usually sold with a funnel to prevent any spillages of the "amber nectar". A very popular 18th, 21st birthday gift or as thank you token to members of a wedding party the hip flask is enjoying a resurgence in popularity.
